Salem in October
Your October weekend in Salem, with a table at the end of it.
October weekends in Salem are the busiest days of the year in a city built for a tenth of the crowd. They are also wonderful, if you plan the day around the crowd instead of against it. Here is how we would do it.
Morning: arrive before the crowds do
Take the commuter rail from North Station; it is about thirty minutes and it puts you a ten-minute walk from Essex Street. If you must drive, be parked by late morning, because by early afternoon the garages are full and downtown closes to cars. Start with whatever you came for: the Peabody Essex Museum, the Witch Museum, the memorial on Charter Street, the House of the Seven Gables down by the water.
Afternoon: the street
By early afternoon Essex Street is the event. Street performers, costumes, the line outside every historic house, the smell of fried dough. Lean into it. If you want a break from it, the 4 PM matinee of Dracula's Speakeasy is ninety minutes in a dark room with four drinks, two minutes off the mall, and you come out at 5:30 with the whole evening ahead of you.
Evening: eat early, then the Count
Restaurants on Essex Street and around Derby Square fill quickly on October weekends, so eat on the early side. Doors for the 8 PM performances open at 7:30 PM. The performance runs until about 9:30, and the four cocktails are the menu inside, so arrive fed.
Late: the street again
You walk out at 9:30 onto Essex Street with Salem's October still going, and the day crowd thinned out. The last trains back to Boston run late on October weekends; check the schedule before you go and you will have time.
Where we are
On Essex Street, in the middle of everything.
Cinema Salem is inside Museum Place, the small mall whose doors open straight onto the Essex Street pedestrian mall. When you are standing on Essex Street in October, in the middle of the crowd, you are about a minute from our door.
Walking times are approximate and assume an October crowd. Nothing on this list needs a car.

Questions people ask
Do I have to be 21?
Yes. Every guest is 21 or older and shows a valid government-issued photo ID at the door. That includes the 4 PM matinee.
Are the four drinks included?
Yes. Your seat includes four cocktails, one poured for each chapter of the story: The First Bite, Fresh Blood, The Crypt, and Dracula's Kiss.
How long is it?
Ninety minutes. Doors open thirty minutes before the performance.
Is there parking?
The Museum Place Garage on New Liberty Street is attached to our building, and the MBTA station garage and the South Harbor Garage are the fallbacks. In October the city recommends the commuter rail from North Station, and so do we.
What should I wear?
Come as you are. Plenty of people dress for the occasion, and you would not be out of place in black.
Can I book a table for a group?
Buy as many seats as you need in one Eventbrite order and tell us the occasion through the question form, so the bar knows before you sit down. For a larger party or a private performance, write to us and we will build a night around you.
